The function organized here on Thursday on the occasion of Republic Day was unique in many ways. The theme of this year’s function was public participation and accordingly this year the first row in the visitors’ gallery was reserved for Shramyogis like Central Vista workers, frontline workers, vegetable vendors and auto drivers instead of VVIPs. This year, invitations were sent to common people from all sections of the society such as Shram Yogis involved in the construction of Central Vista, Kartavya Path, New Parliament House, milk, vegetable vendors, street vendors etc. These special invitees were made to sit prominently on the duty path.
Meanwhile, cultural presentations were given by 479 artists selected through the nationwide Vande Bharatam dance competition. The theme of this cultural program was ‘Nari Shakti’ presented by 326 women. It was supported by 153 male dancers in the age group of 17-30 years. They presented a fusion dance of classical, folk and contemporary, depicting ‘power of woman’ through five elements earth, water, air, space and fire. This is the second time that the dancers of the cultural program were selected through a nationwide competition.
This year e-invitation was introduced to replace physical invitation cards for guests and visitors for the Republic Day celebrations. For this a dedicated portal www.amantran.mod.gov.in was launched. Sale of tickets, issue of admit cards, invitation cards and car parking labels were done online through this portal. The objective was to ensure that the entire process is more secure and paperless. Also it was to enable people from all parts of the country to participate in this national event.
This time 45 thousand people were invited for the parade, in which about 12 thousand passes were distributed, while more than 32 thousand online tickets have been sold. This year, different arrangements were made to sit on the Kartavya Path. Chairs were placed on the vertical platform, so that people sitting behind could also watch the programme. These new type of chairs were of light gray colour.
Apart from this, another big change was seen. For the first time this year, the facility of free travel in the metro was provided to the people coming to see the Republic Day celebrations. Anyone who had a pass for the Republic Day celebrations was provided with a pass to travel free of cost by the Metro. For this people had to tell their mobile number and pass number.
