Dronacharya awardee Gurcharan Singh received Padma Shri
Dronacharya Awardee Gurcharan Singh is one of the most respected cricket coaches in the country. Gurcharan, who played 37 first-class matches for Patiala, Southern Punjab and Railways in the fifties and sixties, did a diploma in coaching from the National Institute of Sports and then started his career as a coach. He has been awarded the Padma Shri award this year. He became the head coach of the Sports Authority of India Center in New Delhi. He has the credit of producing 15 international and about 100 national level players. Those who learned the tricks of cricket from him include Surinder Khanna, Kirti Azad, Maninder Singh, Ajay Jadeja, Vivek Razdan, Murali Karthik, Vivek Razdan. Even at the age of 87, he could not stop himself from going to the cricket ground. Gurcharan, who described cricket as his ‘oxygen’, recently batted on behalf of Delhi’s Veteran cricket team in a match.
Padmashree to Dr. Verma, expert in genetic medicine
Dr IC Verma, an expert in genetic medicine from Gangaram Hospital, has been selected for this year’s Padma Shri award. This year he is the only doctor from Delhi who has been selected for this honour. 85 years old Dr. Verma has a big name in the field of genetics. He has been working in the field of genetic medicine for the last 56 years. He has received many honors including BC Roy earlier. In 2003, his work in the field of genetics found a place in the Limca Book of Records. He has successfully done more than 2000 cases of Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Genetics.
